Water plays an important role in its history for several reasons. On the one hand, because it stands on the banks of the river Ebro and, on the other, because it experienced a period of great splendour during the 19th century up until the mid 20th, thanks to the mineral rich medicinal waters of its old spa, known as the “Spanish Vichy”. Nowadays its waters are the inspiration for the Museum of Water and a source of enjoyment for the current adventure centre.
The surroundings are ideal for spending a day in the country. You can eat in the field of chestnut trees or go down to the swimming pools.
Sobrón is also an area of great ecological and scenic interest, featuring a spectacular gorge crossed by the river Ebro. Its rich flora creates a natural habitat for a large number of animal species and, in fact, it has been declared Site of Community Importance (SCI) within the Natura 2000 Network and Habitat of Community Interest, Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA).
You can get to know the surroundings by enjoying a pleasant horse ride, cycling or hiking the various routes, as well as using the Via Ferrata, all ways to ensure that you discover a unique natural environment.
If you like “risks” then don’t miss the “Sobrón Adventure Centre”, where you can enjoy activities like zip-line, kayak or canoeing, “Stand Up Paddle”, “BIG SUP”, paintball, climbing, hiking, orienteering, archery and diving for beginners.
The Sobrón Museum of Water is another of its attractions. The only one of its kind in the Basque Country, unique both for its contents and its design, aimed at the general public and meant to be an interactive space where modern technologies and simulations provide learning and fun at the same time.
The Museum of Water also aims to be an instrument of environmental education and make visitors aware of the need to conserve natural resources, respect the environment and promote responsible use of water.
