Pilgrimage to Olárizu

Since the 19th century, the Monday after the Festival of the Nativity of Mary - 8th September - is the date for a popular pilgrimage held in the Fields of  Olarizu, located south of Vitoria-Gasteiz, in order to climb up to the cross that crowns the hill.

On that same morning the city council conduct an annual visit of the boundary stones that mark out the limits of the municipality, led by the mayor in his capacity as Equerry. In the afternoon, the fields are the venue for various family recreational activities. This pilgrimage heralds the end of summer and the peasant ritual of thanksgiving for the harvest is fulfilled.
