In the small village of Tuesta is what has been referred to as the Cathedral of Valdegovía. It is a beautiful church, in honour of Our Lady of the Assumption, which dates back to the 13th century, built during the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, to which certain features were added, such as the chapels, the tower, the main altarpiece, etc.
The main entrance is formed by the most elaborate set of archivolts in Álava and one of the clearest examples of Romanesque art in the province. This is a beautiful work of art with ornamentation that depicts a series of angels and humans, beasts and monsters, birds and vegetation, in multiple scenes. The main entrance is much later than the nave, from 1795.
Declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1932, the exact date of construction is unknown, although experts consider that most dates from the second half of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th.
Further Information
Guided tours arranged by the Valdegovía Tourist Office open the door to an interior that houses a modestly sized but nonetheless impressive vault, strengthened by arrises that rest on columns to create five sides, each of which has its own window.
The church is only opened for guided tours (Valdegovía Information Office) and religious services.
