Old time Market of Artziniega

Old time Market of Artziniega

The Old Market places the village of Artziniega and its Complex of Historical Monuments into a time machine to recreate a medieval market where the customs and trades of centuries ago appear on its streets for the public to enjoy.

It is held annually on a Sunday in the second half of September to coincide with the festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Encina.

This event recalls the important role that Artziniega played as the go-between for overseas and inland trade.

Those who visit the Old Market are surprised to see the local people transformed into minstrels, clergymen, craftsmen, inquisitors, pilgrims, maidens, beggars and buffoons to liven up streets packed for that day with stalls offering artisan products. This year’s event will also feature the Pipers of Laguardia and a display of traditional grape pressing.
